What's your experience coaching teams toward being Agile?

Our company is just beginning our Agile journey. We have a large IT shop (5000+) with a high degree of complexity and tightly coupled applications. Our projects deal not only with software development (everything from legacy to J2EE), but also training development, process creation, strategy, hardware and infrastructure implementations.

In 2007 I worked on a project to lay the groundwork for introducing iterative development, Agile and Scrum to the organization. We used agile concepts on this project and in 2007 I became a certified Scrum Master. As part of the org change, a coaching support team was created in January 2008, which is how I began my coaching adventure. I am currently working with three projects as they begin learning the concepts and applying them in our very waterfall environment. I also do adhoc coaching as the need arises and teach an in-house Iterative Development Overview class. In addition I work with process owners to assist them in modifying their "waterfall" processes to work in an iterative fashion.

What do you plan to learn /explore at this conference?

I hope to learn how to coach more effectively - coaching an enthusiastic team is different than coaching a hesitant team - what are those coaching techniques to use in varying situations?

I also would like to collaborate with others, especially with those from large organizations, on challenges (both technical and organizational) and possible solutions. How can I better help our projects avoid common pitfalls? What lessons have others learned?

Finally, I am excited to be able to make contacts for continued dialog.

How do you plan to contribute?

As a new coach I have lots of questions and curiosity! I can provide a large organization perspective.

I would like to talk about Going Beyond the Books – in other words – after reading the books, attending the conferences, we get the concepts. Now how do we make it work in the real world? What if you don't have a dedicated team, product owner? How can you have a self-directed work team when individuals aren't motivated or are just "waiting for retirement"? How do Agile principles mesh with ITIL?
