What's your experience coaching teams toward being Agile?

At a JavaOne conference long ago, I peeked into a room that was overflowing. Elbowing my way in, it was Martin Fowler talking about Refactoring, and Kent Beck got up to say a few words as well. That must have been in '99 or 2000, and I ended up buying and reading their books. They were either brilliant or crazy, and I figured the only way to know was to try it with a client. So I talked them into a partial XP adoption, and loved it.

Ever since, I've been doing a mix of coaching, developing, and managing. Although I've worked with some very large companies, I focus most on startup Internet companies. One of the best things about them is that the need for agility is a given.

What do you plan to learn /explore at this conference?

Although I talk a lot with various practitioners, I don't spend a ton of time with other coaches. I'm looking forward to seeing how other people approach coaching, what is working for them and their teams, and how things are changing as Agile becomes more mainstream.

How do you plan to contribute?

I aim to do a lightening talk. I'm glad to lead a session on the particulars of agile methods in startups, which have both unique benefits and unique challenges. And I'll likely be an active participant in the sessions I attend.
