What's your experience coaching teams toward being Agile?

It's only been the last three-plus years that I've thought of my career as being a coach rather than a software developer, but my attempts at being an Agile change-agent go back well before than. I have coached from two vantage points—as an insider of the team, helping to produce software and coaching in the process, and as an outsider—an explicit coaching role. I have found there are advantages and disadvantages in each.

What do you plan to learn/explore at this conference?

I would like to explore the balance between coaching in process (people over tools, communication, iteration, etc.) and coaching in software development (TDD, OO design principles, expressive code). I often find a dual need, and it's not always clear which is the most urgent. When it is clear, it seems often the case that the most urgent need is the area where the team feels most confident.

I don't have a well-formulated expression of the problem, but would like to hear the thoughts of others to bring it into sharper focus.

How do you plan to contribute?

In typical open-space style—sharing my thoughts and ideas, listening to and learning from other, and seeking synthesis between the two.
