What's your experience coaching teams toward being Agile?

I am a veteran software developer and have worked as an internal and external agile coach, Scrum Master and developer since 2003. For the past two years I have been working full time as an external coach for large organizations in industries that are highly regulated (or are supposed to be). I do training, mentoring and coaching as demand arises. I am a member of the Scrum Alliance group to develop a Certified Scrum Coach program.

What do you plan to learn /explore at this conference?

I have several goals for this conference:

- As an external coach, I sometimes lack sufficient feedback on my efforts. My engagements often consist of a couple of training days and a few follow-on phone consultations. I may hear about results at the end of a project. If those results suggest that the project could done much better, it is too late for me to contribute. I do not get the kind of quick, rich feedback on my efforts that is so important to agile projects and adoption programs. I would like to hear how other people obtain feedback and in what forms.

- In the course of working on the Certified Scrum Coach project, we had a lot of discussion about the skills and knowledge a successful coach should have. I have since leveraged that learning for personal improvement as well as for the design of a coach training program for one client. While there is nothing better than practice and exposure to challenges to improve one's skills, I believe that it is possible to be proactive in developing new capabilities in this career as well. I would like to hear what kinds of things other people think are important for a coach to know and learn.

- I may hear comments on the Certified Scrum Coach project and look forward to resulting discussions. I am happy to talk about it, though I am not planning to evangelize it.

- I want to meet with people I know and hopefully make some new connections with other people in the field.

- I am eager to learn from the experiences of others.

How do you plan to contribute?

I am happy to share my experiences in the sessions and unofficial events I attend.

I have three specific topics to propose:

- How do you scale up agile coaching within a large organization?

- What knowledge, skills and tools can a person cultivate to be a better agile coach?

- What are some ways to define success criteria for coaching engagements and track progress towards them?
