Using Scrum in Detroit

  • What is your experience coaching teams toward being Agile?
I have been a Java developer for past eight years, typically participating in a technical lead role on mostly waterfall projects. However, in 2007, my roll changed when I was introduced to Scrum. I became a certified ScrumMaster and helped transition the development team I am on to Scrum. Since the beginning of 2008, I have been asked to help coach other teams in our organization that are also interested in moving to Scrum.

  • What do you plan to learn/explore at this conference?
In my past life as a technical lead, I was the planner. I often found myself telling other team members what they were going to do rather than asking them for their opinion or what they would like to do or even getting their buy in. I find it is a hard habit to break, and even struggled with this at times while playing the ScrumMaster role. Since I am being asked to assist with my company's Scrum rollout, I want to make sure that I truly am a facilitator\coach. I am looking for suggestions on:

  • How to make suggestions rather people feeling like you are always telling them what to do
  • How to involve people in the agile process (i.e., no bystanders)
  • How to help influence people to be more open to agile development
  • How to approach a team who is going off course to get back on track
  • How to bring out the best in people

  • How do you plan to contribute?
Since I am being asked to help other teams in my organization who are interested in moving to Scrum, I have a number of real world examples to share that I am sure will be great conversation starters. I also willing to share my successes as well as missteps while moving to Scrum. Plus, I have a number of questions that I hope will generate conversation.
