How do we keep learning, when we're always the teacher?

From a conversation with Pat in the AgileCoachesPub, while he waited for a train in Montreal:

9:09:46 AM Deborah Hartmann says:
We all need to be do-ers rather than coach-ers from time to time
9:09:53 AM Patrick Wilson-Welsh? says:
Oh, I hear that.
9:09:56 AM Deborah Hartmann says:
To maintain perspective
9:10:05 AM Patrick Wilson-Welsh? says:
To reinvigorate practice.
9:10:12 AM Patrick Wilson-Welsh? says:
To balance books smarts with street smarts.

and to retain accountability
9:10:21 AM Patrick Wilson-Welsh? says:
That's an open space topic right there, eh?
9:10:24 AM Deborah Hartmann says:
(remember that our advice has real repercussions)

What does it boil down to?

What does it "boil down to" for you? What tactics do you use to be sure you don't go into auto-pilot? Call it humility, mindfulness, student-mind, or

We need to have training and collaboration between coaches, without a doubt.

I think I heard that ThoughtWorks? routinely did "Pair Coaching" — two coaches per team. <Would be great for "good cop / bad cop" psychological games, I think. ;-> If Pair Programming is good, why would we deny ourselves the benefits of Pair Coaching?

My understand is that the "McCarthy BootCamp?," which teaches their "Core Protocol" ("Software for your Head") is also lead by coaching teams — who discuss the student's progress, in the presence of the students, in the middle of "class." http://www.mccarthyshow.com/BootCamp/tabid/323/Default.aspxexternal link

But seriously, I think it foolish for us to try to go it alone all the time. Doesn't our work require creativity and a fresh perspective, from time to time?!?

From another perspective, are we considering the "do coding" vs "teach coding" angle — where we need to dive in and get our fingers on the keyboards along with our Pair Programming partners, to keep us honest in our expectations, and to keep our technical skills current and useful?
